this nearly two- gram gold nugget’s character.     

Quirky refers to unorthodox or the opposite of common place –  

that certainly fits in this event!   

This quite non-conforming, precious mass is profusely faceted

and quite wild in its natural design. 

We can see that over time the quartz matrix which had been inter-twined has broken down, lost its grip, and slipped away, probably decomposing into a silica sand.  That’s what eons of time and erosional gravitation do when moisture descends and co-mingles with all the minerals and chemicals below the earth's very surface.  This happens more in some locations than it may in others. 

It definitely occurred here.
