If you already know, let’s enlighten those who don’t!   

“Rougher than a Cob!”

Oh, on one side it certainly is “rougher than a cob”! 

The other side, however is far more compassionate, or forgiving...

A seemingly strange beginning to this description?

Possibly...

Yet quite appropriate..

Let me explain here as gently and tastefully as I might. 

We shall visit the past- which I imagine is still a current condition in some parts of the world, including the rural USA, such as Appalachia and similar areas. 

Farm country where folks are grounded in reality...

 If you’ve never used an old time “outhouse,”

maybe you’d like to experience this! 

You see, before toilet paper was readily available

 and now since it’s so expensive,

there was – and is - another option

and that’s the “cob” - corn cob, that is!! 

In the real world - farm country - many acres of dried corn on the cob are harvested as animal feed.  The kernels of corn are removed (shelled) and what remains is the bare cob or “ear” - minus the corn.  Stacks and stacks of dried corn cobs are the result.

 Their best and most logical and natural use – is as toilet paper! 

It works and has for hundreds of years. 

And yes, those cobs are noticeably rough. Hence, the old adage

“Rougher that a Cob!”

“Now you know the rest of the story!”

Oh, about this beautiful gold nugget...

It’s magnificent – long and slender,

it’s half smooth and charmingly contoured

but with substance on one side, while the other side is, well...

“Rougher Than a Cob!”
